The Apennine Mountains trend through the Italian Peninsula, forming the backbone, where they eventually meet the Alps. There are two volcanoes named Vesuvius, located near Naples, and Mount Etna, located on the island of Sicily. When looking at a map, the Italian Peninsula, reflecting the shape of a boot, looks as if it was "kicking" the island of Sicily. Another island that makes up the Italian Peninsula includes the island of Sardinia, covering about 9,301 square miles, or 24,090 square kilometers. Italy is also bounded with several other countries including France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Italy covers a vast majority of land, spreading over about 116,305 square miles, or 301,230 square kilometers of land.
There are many land forms such as rivers and seas that are geographically located near Italy. Because Florence, Italy is a peninsula, it surrounded by four major seas which are the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Adriatic Sea. When looking at a map, the Mediterranean Sea lies to the south of Florence, the Tyrrhenian Sea lies to the west of Florence, the Ionian Sea lies to the south of Florence and to the east of the island of Sicily, and the Adriatic Sea lies to the east of Florence. The major rivers that lie in Italy would be the Po River, the Arno River, and the Tiber River. All of these rivers flow to their own extent though different cities throughout the Italian Peninsula such as Rome. The Po River flows 652 kilometers, occupying more than 44,000 kilometers of land and passes through the Lombard plain. The Arno River flows 241 kilometers, and the Tiber River runs 405 kilometers. In Italy, there are 1,500 lakes such as Lake Lugano and Como, which are both located to the north of Italy.

To the south of Florence lies the city of Rome, which is the capital of Italy, and the city of Naples, which is the capital of the region of Campania. When looking at a map, Florence is located to the right of Pisa, which is a city in Tuscany. Its location acts like a crossroad between the city of Bologna and Rome where Viterbo intercepts. Below Pisa is the city of Livorno which is directly to the left of Ancona at the perspective when looking at the map. To the north of Florence are the cities Parma, Ferrara, Ravenna, Padova, Treviso, Pavia, Bolzano, Belluno, Sondrio, Varese, Vercelli, Genoa, and many more cities that are located within the border where Italy connects with the other countries.
The geography of Florence, Italy also consists of both humid subtropical weather and Mediterranean climate because of its location. Throughout the four seasons and twelve months, Florence receives a variation of different and extreme climates. Each of the four seasons persists of extremely hot and cold weather ranging from almost 90°Fahrenheit (32.2°C) to below 50° Fahrenheit (10°C). During the summer, from June to September, there are temperatures of 32°C (89.6°F), a variation between 16-17°C (60.8-62.6°F), and 34°C ( 93.2°F) on an average high. Although there are high temperatures, many heavy thunderstorms occur. In autumn, from October to November, there are temperatures around 22°C (71.6°F) with showers of 120 millimeters of precipitation. In the winter, from December to February, there are temperatures below 10°C (50°F) and 1°C (33.8°F). In the spring, from the time of April to May, temperatures of 15°C (59°F) and 18°C (64.4°F) appear.
