A government is a the political direction and the authority that has control over actions of a person or a society of a country. Before the Early Renaissance, which began in the 15th century, Florence was governed as a commune. A commune is where a group of inhabitants live and share possessions with each another in an area. During the time of the Renaissance, Florence obtained their own from of government and way of living because the country of Italy was broken up into smaller sections called city-states. Other city-states in Italy were Milan and Florence who also evolved around their own form of government. Florence's government projected and guaranteed freedom and liberty where their own citizens had the ability to participate in making decisions, which was the process of approaching democracy, but because the new laws were overruled, Florence reverted back to a government where they were controlled by a small amount of people.
